Primavera Praecox

With last week’s string
Of sixty degree days
The hyacinth and daffodils
Broke ground
In my neighbor’s yard
It’s still February
And today the wind
Has shifted back north
Putting a universal chill
On the ardor for life
Over the next few weeks
I guess we’ll proceed
To play hide and seek with
Rebirth and senescence
It’s easy to see how
Any flower or bud or
Kindred spirit among us
Could end up feeling
Hopelessly confused
