Meditation Poem (by Shih Te)

This is one of the best meditation poems I've come across yet in the Chan tradition.  It is attributed to Shih Te, who according to legend was the occasional sidekick of Han Shan, the otherwise reclusive poet of Cold Mountain fame.  There are those who doubt whether there ever was such as person as Shih Te or Han Shan for that matter.  But reading this poem I have little doubt that whoever wrote it spent many long hours sitting in meditation, on a mountaintop or otherwise, open to the radiance that fills the earth and sky.

Not going not coming
But upright and deeply rooted

Residing neither inside nor outside
But somewhere in between

Like a drop of water
Unblemished and contained

Yet open to the radiance
That fills Heaven and humankind

无去无来本湛然
不居内外及中间
一颗水精绝瑕翳
光明透满出人天

A Body Like Gnarled Wood

Here's another poem by the 16th century Chan monk HanShan De Ching - a surprisingly upbeat description of the clarity of vision that comes with aging -- if only we could all be so fortunate.

A body like gnarled wood
A mind that’s ashen

Snow fills my head
Frost covers my cheeks

It’s not as if age has arrived
To dispel all melancholy

But nowhere do I behold
Even a spec of dust

形如枯木

形如枯木念如灰
雪滿頭顱霜滿腮
不是老來偏厭世
眼中無處著塵埃

Unpainted Masterpiece (for Brad Melamed)

When I paint my masterpiece
I already may have ceased
Painting masterfully at all
Instead consigned to that sketchy realm
In the mind’s museum up on the wall
Where shadows flicker, dance and fall
My masterpiece may go completely
Unpainted after all

A Hundred Thousand Worlds (Han Shan De Ching)

A hundred thousand worlds
Emptiness blossoms in shadow

Body and mind come together
Flowing in bright moonlight

Whether by cunning or love
Time just now has broken

To be within nowhere
In mind lies the proof
