The Bridge that Flows (Master Fu Dashi 傅大士)

Empty handed
Grab the handle
Of the hoe

Walk forward
Riding atop
A water buffalo

A man stands
On the bridge
Crossing over

It’s the bridge
Not the water
That is flowing

空手把鉏頭
步行騎水牛
人在橋上過
橋流水不流

Sometimes it's hard to see much difference between a koan and a good poem.  That certainly seems to be the case with this gem from master Fu Daishi - a simple enough image (that even a modernist like Ezra Pound would be happy with) that leaves us with much to ponder in the notion that it's the bridge and not the water that keeps on flowing.  To further support this way of seeing, I offer this koan with a brush by master Vincent Van Gogh.
